Character Sketch Essay

A Walk to Remember
Many people today like to read sad mushy stories. The character in this book is put through a lot dealing with his loved ones. He is a rich kid who has everything going for him until the love of his life faces something challenging. Authors usually right love books that have a happy ending but this book has a twist and ends in a tragedy. This book takes place in a small town in North Carolina. In the novel A Walk to Remember, by Nicholas Sparks, Landon Carter is a rich boy who runs for school president just to get into the college of his choice, University of North Carolina and has a girl on his mind that nobody would even imagine dating until he found out she has cancer.
Landon Carter was raised up in a religious family and town of living. He had grown up without a dad because his dad was in the war. He was taken good care by his mother. “She was a nice lady, sweet and gentle, the kind of mother most people dream about. But she wasn’t, nor could she ever be, a manly influence in my life” (Sparks 13). Even though Landon was rich doesn’t mean he was the good child. He would speak out late with his friends and would eat boiled peanuts in the graveyard behind the church. Other parents would whisper to their kids “You don’t’ want to be like that Carter boy. He’s on the fast track to prison” (13). The beginning of his senior he wasn’t sure if he wanted to take drama class or chemistry class. He ended up choosing drama class because he thought you could blow it off and sleep. He was the normal teen thinking he could blow off drama class, but that didn’t happen.
The first major event that Landon went through was meeting Jamie Sullivan. Jamie was a girl who everybody though was a nerd. Her dad was a minister, but nobody knows that she lost her mother from childbirth. Jamie kept that to herself. When it came time for the schools senior high school dance Landon couldn’t find a date. He was the school president and he couldn’t go to the dance without a date. Landon was so desperate that he looked through his high school year book to find girls to ask. He looked and looked until he came to Jamie Sullivan. He knew he had to ask her before Carey Dennison. One day after school Landon ran to Jamie’s house as fast as he could until he got tired. He didn’t want Carey to ask her before him so he knew he had to get there first. When he showed up to her house he was all sweaty and out of breath. He rang her door bell and she answered the door. She knew that he wasn’t there just to talk because Landon never associated with Jamie. Landon finally got the nerve to ask her to the dance and she yes said but under one condition “You have to promise that you won’t fall in love with me” (44). He smiled and gave her his word. When the dance came everything changed. He began to fall in love with her when he looked her in the eyes when they were dancing. But he didn’t want to tell her because she told him to not to fall in love with her.
The second major event that Landon Carter went through was falling in love with Jamie and her telling that him that she has cancer. When Landon had asked Jamie to go to the homecoming dance with him she said yes but under one condition that you don’t fall in love with me. The reason she had said that was because she knew she had cancer and was going to die, but Landon didn’t know that. He had no intent in falling in love with her but when they went to the dance they had a fun time and fell in love. These two together were like peanut butter and jelly. Landon was always with Jamie and they never left her side. Jamie had always dreamed about getting married. Landon wanted to make Jamie’s dream come true before she died. So Landon asked Jamie to marry him. She said yes. Landon knew that Jamie was going to die soon so they wanted to have a pretty wedding. Jamie and Landon had a beautiful wedding. The titles come from when Jamie is walking down the aisle in the church to get married because it is showing her struggle and that is the “walk to remember” (237).
Landon and Jamie are the perfect couple for each other. They get along well and they are meant to be. Landon has changed dramatically in this book because he went from being a kid who didn’t care about what people thought about him to a boy who cares a lot about her girlfriend and his life. Nicholas Sparks describes this when he says “In front of god and everyone else, I’d promised my love and devotion, in sickness and in health, and I’d never felt so good about anything” (240). Landon knew that Jamie was going to die but that didn’t stop him from doing anything. Landon was with Jamie every day and every moment of her life. He never left her side even when she was really sick. When Jaime died it was sick but he knew that she was dyeing as his wife and she was going to a better place. In Nicholas Sparks “A Walk to Remember”, Landon’s life changed dramatically. Landon knew that dating Jamie was the best thing of his life.
